Inversion’s Workshop - Monday August 14, 2017

My sister Kelly had a great inversions workshop. She had us practice handstands and headstands. For warm up, she had us perform wrist mobility exercises. We were in table top and moved forward and back to stretch out our forearm muscles. We flipped our hands and rested the back of the hands on the ground (still in table top) and did some movements (forward and back) and also did some push ups as well. However, I did not do full push ups because I do not have the forearm strength and I did not want to push myself too hard and get injured before the inversion workshop begins.

We did assisted handstands with a partner and we did a handstand with the partners fist between our lower thighs and the person doing the handstand had to squeeze into the first in order to practice focusing on squeezing everything into the “centerline”.

I did this same exercise in level 1(Journey into Power) and I felt so strong and balanced and I did the handstand with ease; however, in this workshop even though it was a few days later I felt very unbalanced and weak. I am not sure why this is.

We did some handstands against the wall. I got up a lot further than I did when I did Kelly’s inversion workshop in late April 2017. So, I definitely built some arm strength over the summer.

The final pose was classic headstand pose. I was able to get my legs into my chest and hangout for a little longer than I normally do. I find that my core is working very hard to stay in that pose. When I watch other people, they seem to be in the pose with very little effort. I feel like I am either weak(unsafe assumption) or I am doing something. I may not be aligned properly.

Overall, I really enjoyed this workshop and it improved my headstands and handstands considerably. In addition, it has built up my confidence so I can practice these poses before class without the fear of looking bad. I know, I know I am creating another story.
