New Yoga Discoveries and Pain Reduction Friday March 15, 2019

Good News

Last weekend I completed a workshop with @suppleyogi, Dave Lambert, entitled integrity in motion. Dave drew from Kelly Starrett’s How to be a Supple Leopard book. I never thought much about the connection between that book and yoga. However, Kelly’s core principles can be used in yoga to prevent injuries and increase flexibility.

My biggest take away from the workshop was the elimination of a contradictory notion. My notion of “squeezing” and “torquing” the muscle would decrease flexibility, but it is the reverse. Squeezing and torquing the muscle will provide more flexibility and stability all the supporting tissues and tendons which prevents injury.

Dave proved it with various exercises which changed my mindset. I will forever use this in my practice, and I am very grateful for attending this workshop.

Pain Reduction

My wrists have been feeling better since June 2018. I can return to doing handstands and chaturangas minimal pain.

During the last 6 or 9 months, most of my wrist pain has been in my carpal bones specifically the trapezium and trapezoid sections. The pain was consistently worst in the dominant right hand. The left hand healed quickly compared to my right hand.

In 2019, I had some small minor pain in my second and third metacarpals. The pain is present, but yoga does not aggravate my pain.

Today there was a small burst of pain in my fourth or fifth metacarpals. However, it did go away within 10 minutes or so.

Hopefully my wrists will continue to get better.
